Russia,

the country of vast, open areas and endless possibilities of backpacking - one of these areas is the Altai

When starting planning where to go backpacking abroad in summer of 2019, I asked a Russian friend of mine about hiking/backpacking in Russia - if the Urals was a good option. He stated, that the Altai would be the area to visit for backpacking. Actually, a friend of his would be setting up a backpacking tour - if I would like to join in?

I joined in - and I don´t regret it. The hospitality of my Russian hosts was far beyond expectations. The setup of the tour was splendid. The group (all Russians) just marvelous: a flute played in the morning as a sign of breakfast being served, acoustic music and singing by the campfire each night. The landscape: mountains with shields of ice on top rising sharp above deep valleys with roaring rivers, clear-water mirror like lakes with jumping fish, dense forests as well as vast meadows. Warm, sunny days with snowy, frosty nights once in a while with snow covered ground into the day after and a couple rainy days to sharpen the early summer-scent of fresh vegetation.
