Armenia - poor country but proud  and friendly people

Hiking in Armenia is a bit more complicated than one would expect - being a Westerner.

Nevertheless, Armenia should be on the "must visit" list. The main reasons for this statement are: the history, the culture, the weather, the pricing - and Armenians.

During my stay in Armenia I only went on day tours out of Yerevan. Hopping on (or squeezing into) a Marshrutka is a cheap way of going shorter distances. Sharing a taxi (or asking a car owner to give you a lift for some fee) might also be an option to consider as there are interesting monuments to visit with no bus or other public transportation schedule . The mountains are "easy" i.e. vegetated but water supplies can be problematic.

Some parties offer tours but mainly for pre-formed groups. Travelling/hiking on private bases is not so simple/easy by the terms of such activities in most parts of Europe (Grande Randonnée) - but if you have the time - or the connections you could set up a decent (supported) multi-day hike.

In Yerevan, I stayed at the Glide Hostel http://www.hostelinyerevan.am/ and enjoyed good advice and assistance from Anna and her mother. Really helpful folks - just like all other Armenians I got in touch with.
